The impact of the relentless industrialization drive has naturally affected the global climate in a big way. The last two centuries has brought about immeasurable change in the world’s energy demands. The world is now confronted with the need to look at alternative sources of energy apart from the conventional fossil fuels. The option is to look for sources that are both renewable and eco friendly.
Gasification is the process that allows partial pyrolysis of biomass under controlled conditions leading to generation of “Producer Gas”. Producer gas is essentially composed of
Carbon Monoxide (CO) = 18-20%
Hydrogen (H2) = 18-20%
Methane (CH4) = 3-4% |

Carbon di oxide (CO) = 9-12-%
and the balance nitrogen. The flammable and useful components in this gas are CO, H2, CH4. The gas has a calorific value of 1100 Kcal/m3. This gas after being put through a series of cleaning processes, is used to run an engine for power generation. |

Energy cost
“Assuming a biomass cost of Rs. 1500/ton the cost of power generated will be Rs. 2.25 per unit. On the thermal front 1 ltr. Of furnace oil or 1kg. of LPG or any other petroleum based fuel can be replaced by 3.5 to 4 kg of biomass which will cost only Rs. 6/- resilting in considerable saving in the cost of input.”

Other Benefits
The process generates valuable byproducts such as high quality wood charcoal and coconut shell activated carbon depending on the feedstock.
Gasification plants are entitled to accelerated depreciation and Independent Power Projects are exempt from IT for 9 years.
